In a true SMART MANUFACTURING facility, you would use energy efficient components throughout the plant, you would network all of these devices to a master control system so that you could monitor and control your entire process – equipment not in use would idle down or turn off, loads would be sensed throughout the system and adjustments made accordingly. This system would encompass all of your equipment, including compressed air, dust/particulate collection, plant lighting, climate control, etc. The design would minimize power used, power lost to heat, and your power factor would be as close to unity(1) as it could be.  However unless you are building a new plant, this is seldom practical.
