Siemens – From Telegraphs to Global Leader in Automation Technology

Werner Von Siemens founded his company in 1847 with his design for the pointer telegraph, starting with 10 men in a courtyard in Berlin. Winning the contract to build Europe’s first long-distance telegraph line, the company grew from the 670-kilometer link into high-voltage engineering and major international projects in the late 1800’s, telephone networks and lamp manufacturing in the early 1900’s, to the world’s first transistorized control system in the 1950’s. The company transformed it’s SIMATIC platform into programmable logic controllers (PLCs) using the microprocessor and integrated circuit technology, giving birth the S3. As technology rapidly evolved, the SIMATIC product matured the S7 generation of controllers, enabling seamless communication between facility and office.

Since the Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) platform was born in 1996, Siemens has reached new milestones in automation technology, empowering customers with market-leading products coupled with integrated software, a complete engineering framework, and new tools blurring the lines between real and digital worlds, enabling virtual simulation, testing and commissioning of Siemens devices.

Today, they are leading improvements in automation across 190 countries, maintains more than 280 manufacturing facilities and employs more than 370,000 employees.
