The Schmersal Group’s Beginnings
Founded shortly after the end of World War II in 1945, brothers Kurt Andreas and Ernst Schmersal partnered to establish a company that initially manufactured components for lift production. Over the next few years, their focus evolved toward mechanically-operated electrical control devices, laying the foundation for what would become a global leader in Machine Safety and Automation Solutions.
As their product range grew, Schmersal actively positioned their devices for safety-critical applications, including explosion hazard zones.
Innovating their industry in 1969 they developed the first contactless magnetic switch. As the budding automation landscape was forming, Schmersal’s focus on development and production of switchgear for machine and plant engineering, establishing themselves as one of the first companies to begin developing and manufacturing electronic proximity switches.
When the next generation stepped in, cousins Stefan and Heinz Schmersal took the lead and transformed the company into the enterprise known today for its guiding principle: “Safety in System – Protection for man and machine.”
Quality, Flexibility and Speed
Schmersal delivers on three core strengths: uncompromising quality, a broad product portfolio, and rapid delivery times. Their ability in offering a high vertical manufacturing range keeps them ahead of competition by employing some of the most advanced systems to produce their products 24/7. Electronics are manufactured in the Wuppertal and Wettenberg production plants on several production lines that are equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
Schmersal offers a wide range of product variants, reflecting its commitment to top-tier Machine Safety and Automation Solutions. Most devices are hand-assembled to ensure exceptional quality, while automated lines handle select products. Every item undergoes rigorous in-house testing under strict conditions.
Schmersal has seven production plants on three continents, 1,800 employees worldwide. Their core business competencies are machine safety, automation, explosion protection, and hygienic design. The industries they serve are many and varied, but specialize elevators and escalators, packaging, food processing, machine tools, heavy industry, automobile and automotive.
Product Highlights:
New command device series for food-processing
In the focus of development: hygiene, ergonomics and safety
The H series from Schmersal is a full range of new command and signaling devices for hygiene-sensitive applications, particularly food processing.
Characteristic features of the range of command and signaling devices are gap-free transitions between sealing elements and surfaces and an absence of protruding parts. The command elements are easy to clean and so well sealed that they can withstand regular cleaning with high-pressure cleaners and aggressive cleaning agents. Gaskets and seals between component parts are blue colored.
The line includes many types of command operators:
- Emergency Stop button
- Pushbuttons
- Illuminated pushbuttons
- Indicator lights
- Compact mushroom buttons, illuminated
- Mushroom impact buttons
- Selector switches with 2 or 3 positions
- Step switches, 2-12 steps
- Potentiometer drive knob
- Main switches, for 16A, 40A, 63A, or 125A
